Will the “Trump Tapes” Actually Affect the 2016 Election?

There has been a lot of consternation from Republican politicians over the last few days as they’ve worried about the negative effects of being tied to Donald Trump. If the comments had come from your run-of-the-mill politico, I might agree that they should be worried… but the comments came not from a politician, but from a man running for election as someone from far outside the political mainstream. In fact, while the lewd and crude tape recordings may have a negative effect on Trump’s media coverage and even on his polling… I’m just not sure they’ll have any real effect on the campaign itself.

On CNN this weekend, conservative #NeverTrump er Bill Kristol agreed saying, There’s so much already out there on Trump. But people have somehow rationalized supporting him. Maybe it won’t have much effect. I like his excuse that it was locker room talk…. A locker room is usually full of 20-year-olds, 25-year-olds… Donald Trump was what at the time? 59? … I do think– I hope, frankly, that it does get some seriously moral and religiously people thinking about the character of this man that they have decided to support.”

Over on Fox News, conservative pundit Charles Krauthammer had some very similar thoughts on the issue.

None of this is surprising. If somebody had asked you, about Trump, do you think he talks like this in private? You would answer of course yes. But it’s hearing it. This is what video/audio evidence does. Once you hear it, it becomes information of a different order.
The same with Hillary. Everybody knows that on every issue she has a private position and a public. If they intersect, that’s nice, but if it doesn’t, that’s the way she operates.
But when you hear her say it, admit it, say it in a speech in public, it becomes evidence.
I think this will increase the negatives on both of them, making it, without a doubt, an election between the two most unpopular candidates ever… I don’t think either of them is defensible. It is a question of how skillfully the other uses it.

Lastly, Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski reminded CNN and their viewers that we’re not electing a “Sunday School teacher,” we’re electing a President. (I must admit to not understanding this line of thinking; does this mean we should be content to vote for someone who lacks character and exhibits disgustingly immoral behavior? I’m not sure this is the best line of defense.)

So, what do you think? Will the “Trump Tape” scandal finally finish Donald Trump as a candidate for President? Or will this be just another “bump” in the road on his way to the White House?
