I grew up sitting in church pews with a mom who wears American flags in her hair and a dad who seems to think that Fox News is the only channel on TV. That being said, I’ve heard a lot of opinions on Christians and politics. I’ve heard conservatives say, “You have to be a conservative because Jesus was a conservative.” On the flip, I’ve heard liberals say, “Jesus loved others and gave to the poor – just like we ‘bleeding heart’ liberals. Jesus was liberal.”
In the booklet, “Right Wing Handbook: Demolishing Ten Lies of the Left,” David L. Goetsch makes a great statement saying,
“Liberals and conservatives alike should step carefully when trying to say that Jesus was one of them…neither liberals nor conservatives can lay exclusive claim to Jesus. He was not a political figure.”
As Christians, we can’t fit Jesus into our favored political party. We’ve got to look at Him for who He is and try to be like Him. We need to live as He lived. We need to take each issue, and look at it through the lens of Jesus’ example.
Take abortion, for instance. Goetsch cites “Thou shalt not kill,” in the Ten Commandments, as well as Proverbs 31:8 which tells us to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves. Given these facts, I can’t fathom that Jesus would be in favor of abortion-on-demand – one of the liberals biggest…causes. Christians have got to stand for life.
