Although “May Day” protests have historically focused on workers’ rights and wages, hundreds of illegal immigrants and their supporters stole the show this year as they marched from the Capitol to the White House demanding that President Obama unilaterally end deportations.
The rally’s attendees carried signs targeting Republicans for their “inaction on immigration reform” and demanded that President Obama “act now for immigrant families.” As they marched, staff members from CASA de Maryland – a community organization for latinos and immigrants’ rights – used megaphones to lead the shopworn chants of “Si, Se Puede” (yes, we can) and “Obama, escucha! Estamos en la lucha” (Obama, listen up! We are engaged in the struggle).
