A former director of the British National Health Services (the program that is analogous to Obamacare in Britain) died after having a follow up stomach surgery postponed four different times over a nine-month period.
When asked how this sad situation came about, her husband couldn’t be sure. “I don’t really know why she died. I did not get a reason from the hospital. We all want to know for closure. She got weaker and weaker as she waited and operations were put off.”
Margaret Hutchon, a Liberal Democrat politician for over thirty years and one time mayor of her home town, went in for stomach surgery last June. After the initial operation, a follow up was planned, but over the course of the next nine months four different scheduled operations were postponed. Initially, her family chose to let her convalesce in the hospital as they awaited her next operation. However, as it became obvious that the operation would not be happening any time soon, they moved her back home because they worried about the effect of such a long hospital stay.
‘From July to October there was talk of another operation and then between November and December there were three or four postponements and she was becoming so institutionalised we decided to get her home until an operation was certain.
‘It was a blessing because although neither of us could have guessed it – it gave us a last month together.
‘Nevertheless, she was unable to take proper nourishment and went into the operation on the better side of a low state – she was very weak.’
After moving her back to the hospital, she finally got her follow-up operation; sadly by this point she was far too weak for such a surgery and she was not able to recover from the operation.
