Imagine you are the non-Muslim parent of a 7-8 year-old who just started second grade and learned that your child was being taught verses from the Quran. As Christian parent, how would you react? I know I would be outraged and at the school in heart beat demanding answers and changes.
Then how would you feel if school officials just shrugged it off as innocent mistake by a newer teacher who was just filling in for a regular instructor?
That’s what happened to Chris Sharpe who’s second grade daughter showed him what they were studying in class when he saw the quote ‘Allah loves those who make themselves clean’ in her school lessons. Not only did the worksheet quote from the Quran, but it also gave instructions on maintaining a proper Muslim appearance wearing a hijab and thawb (a long garment with long sleeves).
Sharpe spoke to other parents who also shared his concerns about their young children receiving Muslim indoctrination at the public school. Then Sharpe took his concern to officials at the Cecil S. Collins Elementary School in Barnegat, New Jersey. Basically, school officials blew off Sharpe’s concerns as just an innocent mistake made by a relatively new teacher.
Karen Wood, District Superintendent told the local media that the novice teacher innocently downloaded the worksheet from Pinterest and decided to use it as a lesson plan. Wood did say:
“This worksheet – which was neither carefully reviewed by the teacher nor approved by an administrator – contained a religious reference, in clear violation of district policy.”
“We recognize the significance of this error. Our parents have been extremely supportive as we take measures necessary to ensure that this remains an isolated incident.”
One local responded by telling the media:
“If this had the name of Jesus on it, there would be an even bigger outrage. I hope that proper precautions are made to prevent further indoctrination of Islam.”
Another local stated:
“It was no accident. Democrats across the country are pushing Islam on us.”
Rida Chishti, a Muslim, also condemned the use of the lesson plan in a public school, posting:
“I am a Muslim and I say that worksheet belongs in an Islamic school, not a public school.”
John Sorger also expressed concern about the Muslim indoctrination of our kids, saying:
“Leftists have allied with Islamists because they both share a common enemy; Western Civilization.”
Parent Bob Russo said he feels that the district superintendent need to issue a statement somewhat like this:
“While I understand that mistakes happen, I am seriously disappointed to learn that a teacher made independent changes to a lesson plan, resulting in information being given that didn’t follow subject matter, or state and local curriculum plans and chose to promote what seems to be their own agenda.”
Sharpe was more understanding than I would have been, responding to the school’s shabby explanation saying:
“Obviously you would hope that they would review everything a little bit more, but it happens. I’m very happy to chalk it up as one of those things that just sort of happened.”
