Obama Plays Hardball on Afghanistan Security Agreement

President Obama, along with US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, are done playing around with Afghan President Hamid Karzai when it comes to a pending security agreement. In what is the first strong foreign policy leadership from Obama in quite a while, it appears that our president has done his homework and intends to follow through on his threat to have all US troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014 if Karzai cannot close on the bilateral security agreement, or BSA. The BSA would be an agreement between the United States and the Afghan government defining roles and rights for American military personnel in the country.

According to reports and statements from the White House, those with knowledge of the tumultuous negotiations do not believe Karzai will agree to and sign the BSA. For this reason, President Obama has coordinated with Defense Secretary Hagel and other relevant agencies to enact contingencies for a complete withdraw of US military personnel from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
