One of Florida’s most important Libertarian activists, Adrian Wylie, took to Facebook on Monday to denounce the just passed 2017 National Defense Authorization Act. What, you might ask, is the 2017 NDA act? A new law, snuck in the back-door by Obama while Americans celebrated Christmas and Hannukah, to outlaw any “unflattering” truth being told about the government.
Late Friday afternoon, as most Americans were heading home for Christmas weekend, President Obama quietly signed the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act into law.
Deep inside the NDAA 2017 was a piece of legislation called The Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act. This new law creates an inter-agency Global Engagement Center (GEC) to combat “propaganda” and “fake news,” the definitions of which seems to include any unflattering truth being told about the government. The GEC’s mandate is “national level development, integration and synchronization of whole-of-government strategies to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation.”
Have you noticed how anything that exposes the truth about the U.S. government, like Wikileaks and Edward Snowden, has recently been portrayed as “fake news” and Russian hacking meant to disrupt democracy?
Problem…Reaction…Solution…Playing out before our eyes.
Expect much more of that in the future. Anything critical of government will soon become “enemy propaganda.”
Another GEC objective is to “proactively advance fact-based narratives that support U.S. allies and interests.” The bill includes funding to provide “grants” and “training” to journalists and media organizations.
