New Yorkers’ Message to Mayoral Candidate Hillary Clinton: Thanks, but No Thanks


Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may have been the people’s choice when she ran for the presidency on the Democratic ticket in 2016, but she isn’t the people’s choice for mayor New York, according to a new Rasmussen poll released Tuesday.

Fifty-eight percent of likely voters in the city don’t want Clinton to run again, compared with just 23% who favor her name on the ballot. Nineteen percent of voters hadn’t yet made up their mind.

Buzz about Clinton throwing her hat in the ring began in early January, when an unnamed former city Democratic elected official was quoted saying, “She’s talking about it.” This was followed by a quasi-endorsement by veteran New York Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf, who said that Clinton “would be a terrific candidate for mayor,” adding:

She is wildly popular among New Yorkers — so much so that were she to file, de Blasio would have to file his retirement papers on the same day.

Clinton has since clarified that she would consider running only if de Blasio didn’t enter the race for some reason.
