These are critical times for our nation and our individual communities. Current issues like student loan interest rates or the future of America’s entitlement programs have a direct impact on our lives, yet there are many young Americans who remain apathetic. It’s our time now, and we shouldn’t waste it.
This plea is not to imply that young Americans are, on the whole, uninvolved. In fact, I have many friends and colleagues who are quite active within their communities, and some have made a difference in a big way.
Rather, this article should serve as a call to action for young people who haven’t yet found a way to make a difference. If you’re a young American reading this, listen up! Now is the time for you to lobby for your cause, and help make our generation on a whole a greater force to be reckoned with.
It doesn’t matter if you’re going into business, government, engineering, or medicine. Whatever your interests, there’s a reason for you to be concerned about our nation and its government, and therefore a reason for you to get involved. For example, if you are interested in going into any part of the healthcare system, now is a critical time for you to be involved in the evolving industry. If you’re an engineering student, the issues regarding regulation and federal funding should be of interest. For the future businessmen and businesswomen, things like the controversial tax code and the “one percent movement,” as well as federal regulation should also be on your radar.
The examples above are just a few of the professions and fields that require an increased awareness of government actions, but just scratches the surface. Farmers face government intervention and subsidies, and teachers should be concerned with the state of education in America, and familiar with No Child Left Behind, and Race to the Top.
