Jefferson, Jesus and a nation worth having

Thomas Jefferson was born APRIL 13, 1743.

He drafted the Declaration of Independence, 1776; was Governor of Virginia, 1779-1781; and founded the University of Virginia in 1819.

While U.S. Minister to France, 1785-1789, Jefferson met with the Muslim Ambassador from Tripoli to negotiate freeing hundreds of captured U.S. sailors held in dungeons.

Jefferson asked what the United States had done to provoke the Muslim attacks. He recorded their answer, March 28, 1786:

“The ambassador answered us that it was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise.”
