There are various reasons why tunnels are used. Here in America we mainly see them as a means of enabling transportation such as mountain tunnels for trains and cars. We also have tunnels that go under water, such as in New York for transportation. Or we even build tunnels beneath cities for mass transportation like Atlanta’s MARTA or the Metro in Washington DC. However, in times of warfare, tunnels can be used for escape prisoners — or for far more nefarious means.
Such is the case with the tunnels of Hamas. What Israel knew to be an existing problem has turned out to be sometime quite complex and dangerous – in fact, immensely dangerous. The network of Hamas tunnels now numbers more than 40 and the scheme for which they were built is truly horrific.
