The Gallup organization is one of the most respected polling organizations around. Whether you believe their polls or not, there’s no denying that the Gallup folks know about the science of statistics and how numbers can be used and misused to inform or sway public opinion.
Which is why it’s a big deal when the CEO of Gallup comes out and point-blank accuses the government of lying about unemployment.
“There’s no other way to say this. The official unemployment rate, which cruelly overlooks the suffering of the long-term and often permanently unemployed as well as the depressingly underemployed, amounts to a Big Lie,” wrote CEO Jim Clifton on the Gallup website.
It seems like many conservative critics have been saying this for years. It’s a story that can be read buried in the figures of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which maintains six different categories of jobless numbers just to confuse the issue.
