Expanded Holiday Shopping Trend Continues: Kohl’s to Stay Open for 100 Straight Hours


Following Black Friday sales that saw some stores remain open on Thanksgiving, it appears that Kohl’s shoppers will have the opportunity to shop around the clock in the days that lead up to Christmas. This year’s Black Friday festivities generated the typical news buzz as videos of mobs in Walmart and reports of injuries continue to present the tradition in a negative light. Below is a discussion of Kohl’s latest sales idea and the implications of the continued expansion of holiday shopping hours.

Brown Thursday

This year marked the introduction of a new Black Friday tradition as stores pushed their opening hours all of the way back to Thursday. This led journalists to coin Thanksgiving Day “Brown Thursday” as stores such as Kmart, Walmart and Sears introduced new Thanksgiving hours, as cited by About.com.
The past few years have seen Black Friday hours continue to start earlier as they have now breached a time period traditionally reserved for holiday celebration. This Thanksgiving shopping policy received negative feedback from across the country as people viewed it as a lack of respect for the holiday. One individual stated that not only would she be remaining home on Thanksgiving to protest the shopping frenzy, she would no longer shop at the stores that were open on Thanksgiving, according to WJCT News.


Kohl’s department store has announced that it will stay open for the entirety of the days leading up to Christmas, as cited by NBC News. Beginning on Friday, December 20th, Kohl’s department stores will remain open until 6:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. This translates into 100 straight hours of operation and will mark the first time that Kohl’s has experimented with offering overnight hours.
