Some of the Bizarre New Laws in 2017


A broad range of new laws are set to take effect in 2017. From tax relief on tampons to gun control, Fox News has released an article sharing some of the bizarre new laws going into effect today.

— Marijuana is now legal in several new states for recreational use, such as Massachusetts, Nevada and Maine.

— Minimum wage is increased in Colorado, Maine, Arizona and Washington. In Colorado, the wage will jump from $8.31 to $9.30 per hour for non-tipped workers. It is also slated to increase by $0.90 per hour each year until 2020, when it reaches $12.00 an hour.

— In regards to tax relief, Illinois decided to do away with a 6.25% “luxury” tax on tampons.

— Illinois also introduced several other new laws that start on January 1st. For example, it will no longer be illegal to catch catfish using a spear-gun, pitchfork or bow and arrow.  Also, hunting terminology in Illinois will be updated. “Public hunting ground for game birds” will now replace “public hunting ground for pheasants.”
