This past week I was blessed to meet Alveda King, she is the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King and was an active part in the Civil Rights movement of the 60’s. Being able to spend time listening to her stories and hear firsthand about what her uncle stood for and what he would stand for today was incredibly soul stirring.
A quote was brought up that her uncle said and she was quick to elaborate on what he meant. It is probably one of my favorite quotes of Dr. King, “But we must not stop with the cultivation of a tough mind. The gospel also demands a tender heart.”
Alveda said what her uncle meant when he said this was that the mind of man is ever changing. We are constantly learning; however, no matter the knowledge that we gain, the answer is always in the heart. The answer is always God. Dr. King would want us to remember that. Though the methods change the message should always remain the same.
It brought a tear to my eye, honestly. Sitting there and hearing those words made me feel so small. I often wonder what and how I can get people to be more attentive to the gospel and she said it so plainly…the message doesn’t change. That is why her uncle was so sure and bold. He knew who and what he stood for, he knew what the Bible said and that no matter what came his way, it wouldn’t change.
