New York City’s liberal mayor Bill De Blasio has settled a case that emphasized social justice over the safety of the public and essentially made the police powerless against radical Islam.
The counterterrorism strategy has allowed police to keep the city safe since Sept. 11, 2001. The strategy, inspired by the 2007 report “Radicalization in the West,” was put in place by then-Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, and it helped identify patterns often associated with individuals who participated in jihadist violence.
The report also helped police identify subsets of Muslims who might be “radicalizing” and interrupt their terror plots before lives were lost.
Muslim activists claimed the report made unfair connections between Muslims and inclinations toward terrorism, even though the report was a far cry from tarnishing all Muslims.
